Thanks to all for your information. I have thought about our communications system off and on, done some reading - much of which is too technical for me to understand.

Since most every one in my family lives a great distance from us, I concluded that there’s not an affordable and simple solution for our family.

I have thought about walkie talkies for the daughter that lives close, but we have to drive or walk over to talk to her, since she keeps her phone turned off most of the time - so she would probably do the same with the walkie talkie.
