Yep, I’ve always heard that with movie sequels and franchises, that you reach “the point of diminishing returns”.
I never saw Godfather 3, in part because hearing from people who saw it, said it wasn’t so good.
i know my jaw was on the floor...man, he really waxed her...
I may be in the minority, but I think Godfather III has aged well. Of course it’s not the masterpieces that were the first two, but in these days of endless sequels it’s still a worthy capstone to the franchise.
That being said, I don’t think the “Coda” re-edit is any great improvement over the original, and although it’s not as egregious as Lucas’ butchery of the original Star Wars, it’s best to leave film as is. Film is as much a historical artifact as any other art form, and it does not need updating or re-imagining every generation to try to make it “better”, as tastes vary over time. To re-edit the past is to lose the past.
The Original “Coppola Restoration” of the trilogy was in the best traditions of art preservation efforts and has ensured these films will endure for generations to come, but this effort was unnecessary and is clearly just trying to squeeze a bit more money out of the franchises’ many fans.
Alternatively, as PAR35 suggested, do a Soprano ending and have Michael whacked at the end of Godfather 2. We had the seen the complete corruption of Michael through the first two movies and by the end of Godfather 2, he had alienated everyone in his life that previously mattered. Have Al Neri, probably the only guy who Michael still trusted, betray Michael and whack him. Not that different than what Gotti did to seize control of the Gambino Family, although I don't think that Paul Castellano trusted Gotti. It would have been a good conclusion in my opinion to show the ultimate hopelessness of that lifestyle.
Coppolla didn't want to pay what Duvall was asking, so Tom Hagen was written out of the script.
Somethings should be left alone.
On a related note: I’m wandering around North Babylon cemetery on Long Island lpoking for a particular stone and there is one woth the family name PUZO. I see it and say wouldn’t it be funny if...And there is MARIO down lower on the stone. Mario Puzo buried a few hundred feet off of Sunrise Highway in Babylon LI...who knew...?
oh I hate Diane Keaton in the Godfather!
She was just ghastly. Jane Fonda woulda rocked that role.
Agreed. Keaton has never been credible in any role.
They should have just ended GF 2, with the GF3 ending.
I’m still pissed they killed off Appolonia. Damn you, Fabrizio!
“Just when I thought I was out, they drag me back in”
In the book, Fabrizio gets his. He was running a pizza joint in Buffalo and.... ba da boom.
Really the only time you see Michael lose his cool in the entire GF1 and GF2.
Actually in the "Godfather Saga", where they combined the two movies in Chronological order, they included that scene.
I actually like God Father 3. It has its moments. Yes Sofia Coppola is terrible.
Saw it in the theater & laughter broke out when SC was killed. She is an excellent director, buy should never have been cast in this.
But
If Jane “the traitor” fonda was in it - I, for one, would never watch it
