I’m 67. Right now I’m making good money AND receiving SS. My reasoning was simple: Even though I’ll have to pay taxes on it, I’ll get my house paid off in the next few months. It was worth it because without that payment (it’s our only debt at this point) we can live quite comfortably on SS alone - and keep saving for the future. :)

I point people to Jim DeMint's rant from October 1, 2008. He had some smoking hot words too. Made zero difference.

We have seen this Government socialize our education system and make our schools among the worst in the world. We have seen this Government take over most of our health care system, making private insurance less and less affordable. We have seen this Government socialize our energy resources and bring our Nation to its knees by cutting the development of our own oil and natural gas supplies. And now we see this Congress yielding its constitutional obligations to a Federal bureaucracy, giving it the power to control virtually our entire financial system. Americans understand this and they are angry. They are our judge and our jury. They are watching what we are doing, and they will render their verdict based on our actions.

If we were honest with the American people and explained the failures that have led to this financial crisis, we might have the credibility to ask our citizens to allow us to borrow another $700 billion in their name to try to fix this problem. But we are not being honest. This problem was not created by our free enterprise system. It was created by us, the Congress and the Federal Government.

With good intentions, we made a mess of things. We wanted our economy to grow faster, so we allowed the Federal Reserve to create easy and cheap credit. But this allowed people to borrow and lend irresponsibly. We wanted to help the poor, so we forced banks to make loans to people who could not afford to pay them back. We wanted every American to own a home, so we created Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac to encourage and guarantee mortgages for more people who could not afford them. And all of these easy mortgages, many of which required no downpayment, inadvertently increased the prices of homes to unsustainable levels and created a massive oversupply of unsold homes. Now the value of homes has fallen, as has the value of the mortgages attached to them. ...

All of our good intentions are now blowing up in our face, and we are asking the American people to bail us out. We must also plead guilty to other misguided policies that have made the situation even worse. Our foolish energy policies have created a huge financial burden on every American family and severely damaged our economy. By not opening our own energy supplies, we are now sending nearly $700 billion a year to other countries to buy oil. This has dried up capital at home and made us dependent on foreign countries for our credit.

We have also squandered and wasted hundreds of billions of hard-earned tax dollars on unnecessary and ineffective Federal programs and thousands of wasteful earmarks. Last week, we passed a bill with the highest rate of pork spending in history. While our talk of gloom and doom has heightened the financial panic here and around the world, and while we are asking Americans to bail us out, we are still spending money as if there is no tomorrow. Years of wasteful spending and bad policies have resulted in a huge national debt of nearly $10 trillion. Much of this debt is held by China and Saudi Arabia and other foreign countries that some now say are dictating our financial policies.

It's trivial to find some "good talk" coming out of Congress. But it's just talk. The actions of the institution are pathetic at best, and generally harmful.

Prodigal son. That's unfair too.

Not trying to eqaute government to God, just saying that fairness and freedom are opposing forces.

Well why don’t you get Rand elected president then maybe things will change... or get 50 Rand’s in the Senate.

DeMint was an outstanding senator.

Frankly I don’t think my wife or I received the $1200 stimulus payments. I checked our various bank accounts all the way back to the spring and found no $1200 deposits. Oh well.

-- Rand is going to block unanimous consent? --

This move comes up near the end of every Congress, and the mouth holdout, and this does not mean rand, it's usually some other blowhard, always gives in.

Othrwise, cloture is a slam dunk way to defeat up to 40 holdouts.

Think how much money we’d have in our pockets if the government stopped collecting taxes for services not rendered during the shutdown.

So much smarter.

And think of local and state taxes. The city and county of LA have destroyed so many livelihoods. They deserve nothing except for first responders and such. And Newsom and his overstuffed state employees deserve even less. One time John and Ken read for an hour on the air all state “departments.” The redundancy could not have been done on SNL because it was that ridiculous. Like three different state offices to deal with the most minor of things. I’m making this up but it was like “CA Office of Traffic Accidents”. “State traffic accident statistics dept”. “Management of Traffic accident Information” and this for every kind of department, multiple redundancies, everyone on the payroll with retirements.

Yeah, I see they have passed a 7 day budget extension so they have time to overcome Paul’s objection.

I’d like to see a real effort to end this last-minute passing of huge bills.

In my opinion. iF they have to insist on personal stimulus checks, they should not be going to anyone, regardless of income, whose income has not taken a major hit due to any Corona Virus issues or government related measures.

That means, excluded should be (a) social security recipients and anyone who has any retirement income that has not taken a hit, (b) anyone who has kept their job, (c) anyone whose small business has been blessed with being an “essential” business excluded from restrictions on being open, (c) anyone who was before and remains with solely government social subsidies for their income (they too have not faced reductions), and (d) students who have not lost their status as enrolled students unless none of the conditions in (a) through (c) apply to them.

“Stimulus” if it must be done by Congress should be ONLY to provide stimulus where some form of income loss has occurred, and then restricted by the level of that loss.

Why should a couple earning $74,000 a year, with no job or income loss, and with two kids “deserve” and additional $2,400 a year? They don’t.

I may be over age 70, but as far as I am concerned I have taken no income loss the past two years an no one owes me any stimulus money.

Don’t be sorry. I guess mine is the minorities minority position. It was one thing to “shelter in place” for two weeks when the ControllaVirus was raging and no one knew anything about how to deal with it. I didn’t expect to be compensated for two weeks of shutdown.

But when the leftist governors moved the goalposts and made it a perma-lockdown they became obliged to compensate EVERYONE inconvenienced by their poor judgement. I would prefer that the insanity stop along with the insidious lockdowns, but if they are going to keep at it they need to pony up.

$600 isn’t doing anyone much good, at this point people who are in debt because of this have huge debts, probably in the six figures if you are a land lord or small business owner who has been shut down for whatever stupid reason. So $600 isn’t even going to cover a single debt, let alone all the debts owed.

All it is, is dems buying votes for the GA election

They are already saying if you vote Dem in the GA election, they will give you $1200 Biden Bucks, they even have a webpage set up and everything.
