Interestingly enough, this info states Elaine Chao has 5 sisters! Her father must have come to the US so he could have more children.

Yes, forced abortions for the second child if the authorities find out. Often families would relinquish the girl babies to orphanages or abandon them, for the chance to have a son, IIRC. Sons are/were considered more valuable because they are supposed to be responsible for the parents later in life. If you adopted from China, girls were available, boys rarely unless there was a health issue. (this is what I remember from the late 90’s - much may have changed since then)
