Removing Trump Is Not Enough. He Must Be Prosecuted.
The Nation ^ | 1 Dec, 2020 | SASHA ABRAMSKY

Inauguration Day is only seven weeks away. In “normal” times, the outgoing president and his team would at this point be facilitating a smooth transfer of power—tying up a few policy loose ends, but generally making way for the new president and acknowledging the new political priorities of that president.

None of that is happening with Donald Trump. In fact, quite the reverse........

Given how the post-election period has developed, it’s not enough to remove this man from power. His authoritarian presence on the political stage, the cancer that he represents on the American body politic, must be obliterated, leaving absolutely no possibility of a second act. For he has in this past month declared total war on American democracy. And in this struggle, there can be no middle ground.

There is a lot of talk of “healing” and “moving on,” of ignoring Trump’s myriad crimes in order to somehow nurture the greater good. But healing involves, at the very least, acknowledgment of culpability on the part of the guilty—that was, after all, the foundational principle of South Africa’s post-apartheid Truth and Reconciliation Commission. Trump is not only not admitting any culpability, but his rampage against the legal, political, and cultural pillars of American democracy is actually intensifying as his term in office draws to a close.

Without even a nod to truth, there certainly can be no reconciliation. Trump’s disgraceful, dangerous behavior, from his self-dealing while in government to his last-ditch efforts to subvert the popular will, is cratering trust in American democracy. For this, he must be made to face a legal reckoning.

The only question is what side will police and military choose?

For fun, Trump declares Martial Law, then what?
What’s the plan moving forward?
What precedent is now set?

Quell all uprisings.

Prosecute the criminals who committed massive fraud in this election.

Better this precedent than being under China’s rule.

Good enough start?

I agree. One of Trump’s biggest problems was, in fact, that he was rather weak in dealing with his enemies in government. This was partially because he didn’t have a lot of support, but also because he made the GWB mistake: treat them decently and think they might respond in kind. They don’t.

Trump wasn’t as weak as GWB, but he tolerated disobedience to the point of rebellion. When Nancy Pelosi tore up the SOTU on live television and there were no consequences, I knew it was over.

He may have vented personally and sent out a few tweets, but he actually did nothing, and tweets do not a dictator make.

LOL! When I saw his photo I thought ‘red-diaper-doper-baby’. But no he’s an English radical by birth. Attended one of the finest universities in the world where he apparently learned only Marxism and Communism.

And the Columbia School of Journalism?! If you want to be a journalist, WRITE! You don’t need to spend $100K to get a piece of paper that says you’re a journalist!

Other countries were smart and threw them out when they saw what they were up to.

We gave them host, they fed off our county like a parasite does to a host, then we sat back and let them metastasize, morally and financially bankrupting the nation.

Now we're basically paralyzed with fear of being called names, while the country dies.

Our Fathers(and Mothers), long since passed, would be angered at our complacency, lethargy, weakness, stupidity...and rightfully so.

We should be ashamed of ourselves to have allowed this vermin to piss on their graves, destroying everything they built with their blood, sweat and tears to make America great.

Unless there's serious change to the status quo, the "G" in MAGA will continue to be "Gullible"...until it's eventually "Gone".

The uprisings would be due to declaring Martial Law.(Pre-crime?)
We apparently don’t have proof to prosecute anyone right now, do we?
China’s rule? I think you have master/slave backwards.
They need us far more than we need them.

Are we going to have elections anymore? When?

Last word to you if you like.

Did I miss the part of this story where there are crimes to actually be prosecuted? I read the whole thing and its a bunch of perfectly legal issues handled differently than perhaps a stanch leftist might handle them but legal never the less. This is the question I can never get a good answer for when I press liberals about - “Trumps going to jail”. Strange

I don't think the word "crime" means what they think it means. Unfortunately, with most lefties the only way to teach them the true meaning of the word is by use of force.

I’m sure The Nation came out in favor of prosecuting Hillary Clinton for her spreading the Russian Collusion Hoax and 0bama for spying on the Trump campaign and even disrupting not only the “peaceful transition” but the spying well into the Trump administration.

Robespierre was against the death penalty.

Except for the types of people he had guillotined.
