John Gilbert Getty — an heir to the Getty oil fortune — reportedly died in Texas on Friday. He was 52.
Getty had been found unresponsive in a San Antonio hotel room and foul play is not suspected, law enforcement sources told TMZ.MORE AT LINK

Yep, I love their museums in L.A. and Malibu, but that family provides us all with a cautionary example of the pitfalls of extreme wealth. “All the Money in the World” was the recent flick in which Christopher Plummer masterfully played the old man (replacing the odious Kevin Spacey).

I’ve read a couple of JP Getty bios. History doesn’t treat him well at all. His family life was a disaster, was married five times, and all his kids were f&$ck-ups. They couldn’t wait to sell his company and get their hands on the money.
But he was a brilliant businessman that created wealth and jobs for thousands. He took that responsibility seriously, and understood how free enterprise worked.
Unfortunately, the liberal arts crowd that writes and decides what history should be remembered places little value on work and discipline.

The children of very accomplished/wealthy families need extra watching because of the difficulty of matching the accomplishments of their forebears. You can be anything? Can you become a billionaire? What is extraordinary about Donald Trump is that he not only matched, but exceeded his father’s financial success (who died with $200m to his name) *and* got elected to the White House on his first try. The latter is like getting a hole-in-one the first time you pick up a golf club. Trump made it look easy. Bloomberg showed it isn’t, a billion dollars later. Meanwhile, Bloomberg’s children are trust fund wastrels whose principal occupation is spending his money through various slush funds dubbed charities that are under their control.
You’re right, though I would note that J. Paul Getty, like Donald Trump and William Randolph Hearst, was himself a 2nd generation rich person. It’s absolutely true that the children of the extremely wealthy are at great risk of becoming wastrels, but Trump follows a pattern of *some* rich offspring who parlay the previous generation’s wealth into something even grander. To lesser extent this is also true of people like Warren Buffett, Bill Gates and Mark Zuckerberg who were born into moderate wealth and became uber-rich. It’s really the 3rd and 4th generations of the rich people who seem to be at the greatest risk of screwing up. And then when you get to like 12th generation of extreme wealth like the DuPonts some real eccentric wackos are more the rule than the exception.
I think that when Trump was very young, his dad wasn’t especially wealthy — “old money” wealthy like Getty and Hearst. The big Trump money came later on. DJT didn’t start life with a silver spoon in his mouth like the other guys did. Early on, Trumps lived in a modest house and there was no elegance during the formative years of his life. That could make a difference.
Read a bio on the Vanderbilt family recently. The 3rd and 4th generation pissed it away in grand style on the big houses that just ate money.

Trumps home til he was 4 was a 5 bedrm home. Age four they moved to a 23 room home. Jamaica Estates has always been beautiful.

Maybe he was, I did not know. House had a fabulous library. I think he like to hunt and spend time in Mt. Pisgah vicinity, too.
