Help Identifying Automobile Make and Year
Self ^ | November 22, 2020 | POF

I'm working family genealogy and found a photo of my great grandparents and family. That's my grandfather at upper right. The little girl between great grandma and great grandpa was born January 1924 and she appears about 4 or 5 years old here, so I'm guessing the photo was taken in the summer of 1928 or 1929.

Can you help me figure out what their automobile is? I'm guessing it is a 1928 - 1931 Ford Model A Slant Windshield because of the three windows on the side and the suicide door hinges.

Here's somebody's 1931 Ford Model A Slant Windshield...

Thoughts? What year? Is it a Ford Model A Slant Windshield? It looks like their car had wood spokes, not wire spokes like the second photo. I cannot find the last year Ford used wood spokes on the A.

What do you think? They were farmers in Canada and Idaho, so I'm surprised to see them with such a new car.

The little girls were my mother’s aunts, but they were very close in age, so they were much more like cousins. My mom played with them a lot when she was growing up.

Is there any way to differentiate the 1928 through 1931 Slant Windshield? Why do you think ‘31?

I have photos of my grandfather’s 1930s vehicles. Love those vintage pictures.

It’s a Dodge or similar make. Look at the beltline on the side, not a Model A. Model A”s never had wood wheels

The 31 above has a spare tire set in the left front fender.

The 31 has a chrome headlight back, and what looks like a small rear-view mirror on the left side that the other does not have.

The trim along the upper doors area is different between the two models shown. They have different wheels also.

I think it’s a 1928-ish Chevy Sedan. Here’s a link with several images, including one of the left rear toward the front. Notice the trim around the body line and squared side windows.

“Why do you think ‘31?”

It’s because that’s the name of the picture file:

That was my naming of the second Model A photo below the subject photo. That’s when I was guessing Model A.

I think the Chevrolet is closest. Notice the flattish fenders, the boxy body metal behind the front fender near the running board, the door handle being closer to the lower belt line trim, the middle door hinge being closer to the upper belt lime trim, and the wood spokes.
