I came on the computing scene around windows 9 - it was kind of a nightmare- what with drivers being a pain to install, to peripherals not working- and using dialup at i think it was 28K (Does that sound right?) to try to diagnose computer problems-
My neighbour was way before windows 9 but not sure what version- i remembered him saying how much ‘better 9 was’ lol- He died a few years ago- before windows 10 got established- -

Windows 1, Windows 2, and Windows 3.x were not true operating systems. They were “operating environments” that sat on top of DOS, which was a true OS.

My first computer was a Sol 20 based on an 8080 CPU. I remember buying a memory card for it. It was 16K and cost $500. Saved programs on a tape recorder. No floppies at first. It came with a BASIC program running a Star War game with text characters. I had to delete each line of code and save that file so I could write new programs in BASIC. The next level upgrade was a North Star desktop computer. The Lab bought one for me. I wrote an operating program so that it could be used to interface with the mainframe computers instead of the old mechanical Teletypes.
