You can’t see the roads at night. It is much easier by the light of day. FWIW, I rode Highway 1 many times at night in the fog, which usually started around Half Moon Bay and remained foggy all the way up into San Francisco, and that was during summer time IIRC.

You just don’t overdrive your headlight. At night in fog it is a bit surreal and you have to stay alert, but neither scary or hard. Good thing the deer population is sparse. That would have made the ride very scary - not knowing when Bambi was going to jump out in front of you mid-curve on a foggy night. But deer is not a problem there or in most of California for that matter.

I have a hunch this one was on purpose since few cyclists would drive there without high confidence and ability. Since Covid suicides are alarmingly high.

I have astigmatism too, but I’ve never had any trouble seeing nor driving curves. In fact no problems in any other conditions except depression after my divorce when I did consider suicide by car accident to spare family and friends the very idea that I took my own life.

Yep, the north bay stretch of highway 1 has a lot of hairy slow switchbacks that are very technical. The south bay is a cake walk comparativlely. The deceased rider just was speeding or was impaired, more than likely.

Devil’s slide was often closed when I lived in Norcal due to rock slides. I guess they moved some of the road inland.

Speeding, impaired or intentional. We will never know. But having lived in CA for 20 years, we still loved the Highway 1 drive. Even when it made me a bit carsick. Beautiful road.

His last words were “The money is buried under the big W in Santa Rosita State Park....”

Or, "I have information that will send Joe and Hunter Biden to jail".

Been on that two-lane stretch going southbound to Stinson Beach many moons ago. At that time, there was a ginormous speed bump looking thing that ran along the edge of the cliffs to “bump” you back into the lane if you ran up against it. Not for the faint of heart.

Posted a funny story about that experience here on FR some months back.

Coincidence, yesterday Mac Big Sur was installed on my computer. The wallpaper shows that highway!
For those that have Mac Big Sur, does that point show?
Thanks!

The views are breathtaking. 10 X better than any postcard could depict.

One of these days continue on beyond SF to Westport, north of FT Bragg, it gets even better.

California is such a great state, so sad it is controlled by vile communists.

They built a tunnel through the hill to avoid future highway closures from landslides.
