The albums Genesis made “Foxtrot”, “Selling England by the Pound”, and “The Lamb Lies down on Broadway” were the best in their progressive rock era.

Rush and Yes, and Dream Theater, of course, but Porcupine Tree and Steven Wilson are less known in the USA than they should be.

Once you get addicted to 5/8 and 7/8, 4/4 starts to sound really dull :)

Tagging this for later...I’ve told people that the song encapsulating this year (on multiple levels) is “Domino” by Genesis.

What is your secret prog band?

There's no secret about it. Although I love Genesis - even up to and including "Duke", it's EL&P all the way for me. And as impressive as Mr. Speedy's keyboard playing is, it is Keith's sound as a composer that inspired me to get into composing. All the cool kids are into Quartal Harmony. (Rick Wakeman is not a cool kid composer - but still a great keyboardist).

This is the new guy on the block to watch: Gleb Kolyadin https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M_dAFqUWMTQ"

Yes - Tales From Topographic Oceans

Genesis - Suppers Ready

ELP - Just about anything

Hawkwind

Van Der Graaf Generator

Curved Air

Mike Oldfield

Gentle Giant

Gong

Steeleye Span - Not exactly Prog but pure greatness

Tangerene Dream - Also not exactly Prog

Have been luckuy enough to have seen Yes, Genesis, ELP, Hawkwind, Tangs live, among others.

I’m leaving a ton of stuff out, this is just off the top of my head.

Sure wish there was a music, or Prog pinglist.

Yes - just everything they’ve done.

Jethro Tull - not prof? Listen to “Thick as a Brick” and “A Passion Play”
I hated those when they came out and I was a kid but now I realize how absolutely amazing their musicianship was.

Is this a statement or are you asking for suggestions?

I’d say my current lists would go like this:

Classig Prog:
Rush
Yes
Kansas
Saga (especially early)
King Crimson
Genesis
ELP
(And not quite as prog, but fun - Asia/GTR/3/other Yes/Genesis/KC/etc spinoffs)

“Modern”
Dream Theater
Queensryche (esp Mindcryme/Empre)
Kamelot
Nightwish
Epica

“Modern/fun, but not quite so prog” (to me at least)
Pride of Lions
Work of Art
Lionville
(These have more of the 80’s melodic/semi-prog sound if you are into that sort of thing)

“with a touch (or so) of Jesus”
Neal Morse
Transatlantic (check out Whirlwind)
Kerry Livgren/AD (formerly of Kansas)

Did I miss any?

Oh, and by the way, if there’s anything I might have missed, do let me know. The prog spigot has been pretty dry these days, and waiting for the next Kamelot release might be a while. :)
