ANY - good luck finding one.....
Make sure it can fire .223 and 5.56.
Friend could only obtain an AR via kit building............
Being a MD resident my options are limited due to the Communist government.
I stumbled across this in WV a few weeks ago. Not being a 5.56 fan I bought it anyhow as it was available.
So far I like it. Pretty standard as far as AR-15s go. $700 was a bargain as far as I was concerned. Best part was the store was selling 5.56 ammo for $.50 a round. Good luck finding that online.

Get one while you still can!
Long ago I started out with a Colt LE6920. Mine came with the plastic fore grips. I’ve modified it over the years, but not too drastically. Good gun. Try to find one used.
Check the link often. They sell out and restock every day or every few days. Get a Blue Force Vivkers sling and an Aimpoint PRO sight and you're good to go.
“Suggestions for a dependable, serviceable AR-type weapon?”
Not difficult to find an appropriate battle rifle. According to an abundance of FReepers here, they own at least 10-20 battle rifles and 1 million rounds of ammo for each rifle.
Now, we know that individual troops carry only five or six battle rifles into combat, along with at least 500,000 rounds, on their mule trains. That means they leave somewhere between 15 to 20 battle rifles at home as spares, along with 500,000 rounds of ammo.
I would simply run an ad here on FR asking if anyone would be willing to sell a spare battle rifle. Your choices should be many and unlimited.
All reports on the pre Remington Bushmaster platform are A+.
First rate.
Personally I am not purchasing any weapons that fall under the possible heading of “Assault Weapon” till this mess is at least settled. Am instead looking at scoped bolt actions and lever actions and maybe a couple more pump shotguns. I am going by the ‘94 ban as a guide. Sold off most of my collection 15-20 years ago. Kept what I thought was needed for my needs. I would possibly think about purchases from private sellers but nothing on the book.
Right now you're best off grabbing anything that looks like an AR for whatever price they're asking. My budget recommendation would be look for a Ruger AR556, Smith&Wesson M&P Sport II, or anything by Palmetto State Armory.
Palmetto State Armory sells online and ships to your local FFL. https://palmettostatearmory.com/
However, as of this writing, PSA are completely out of AR rifles, and I doubt you'll find anything in local gun stores.
If home defense I suggest also being sure you have a decent alarm system (I'm in the process of getting my brought up-to-date). That way you won't get caught by surprise as easily.
With all due respect, Sir.
AN AR15 is not a good weapon for home defense. Its a point weapon that can overpenetrate including your neighbors home.
I would suggest a 12 ga. pump riot gun with 8 round mag. You will need plenty of training still. For loads I would suggest no. 4 shot, no. 2 shot, and 00 buck. My personal preference is no. 2 shot. Plenty of heavy pellets that will still be effective at 40 yards. Your wife, even if very slightly built should be able to handle a 20 ga. pump. Same configuration, 8 shot pump. You should be able to get plenty of 12 and 20 gauge shells although selection of shot size could be problematical. Do research, find a good dealer/gunsmith who is willing to help and advise you. Find a professional instructor and listen to him. Talk to him about state and local law. There is much more to this than meets the eye and it is critical. Especially, weapon familiarization and SAFETY.
Good luck finding one now
Palmetto state armory
They are instock Excellent quality
If you can’t find a complete rifle buy the upper and lower separately.
I got a complete A4 style upper w/BCG at Palmetto State Armory for $399 delivered and a complete Magpul lower for $240 with a $40 transfer fee at my FFL holder.
Five magpul 30 rd mags were $80 delivered and UPS will be delivering 250rds of 55g FMJ on Monday that were $171, again, delivered.
I just watched for daily specials for about a week.
Oh, and a back up rear sight was about $25.
I suppose I could throw a bayonet on for around $25 more.
A blogger recently made a case for one; people in crowds are swept up in the moment and act against reason.
Rushing a rifle armed man for instance.
With tunnel vision they might not even notice others around them falling, and having no personal experience of being shot might not be that intimidated by a rifle.
But stick a knife on that rifle and closing with IT becomes more personal, everyone has cut or stuck themselves at least once, that HURTS!
Don’t overlook an 80% rifle. They are reliable, and can be equipped the way you prefer. I have made several lowers, and except for one cosmetic mistake on my first, they work as well as any. The plus is, the government doesn’t know you have it. I used the jig from this site, and I will swear, I don’t think you can screw this up, I was amazed at how easy it was. I really like building the guns, because now I am very familiar with how they function.

I guess I will stick with my old Sterling AR-180 I bought years ago. Like a dummy I sold my Howa AR-180 just a few months before.
Wish I had all the good rifles I bought, in the early 1980s, and sold years ago when the democrats “ONLY wanted to ban handguns! Rifles will not be affected!”
Then they made a grab for the rifles.
I would get at least five and hide three of them.
Rock River Arms. That’s where DEA buys. And me.
