We spent summers crawling inside a 50 gallon drum and rolling down the hill in it. Had some spectacular crashes. Great fun.

I saw a meme on the net that said it all regarding that. It goes something like...

“My generation grew up looking for frogs and shit.

Your generation grew up looking for a wifi connection - We are not the same!

We called them click-clacks. They were an interesting novelty but really not much fun once you got the hang of them

We used to slide down steep muddy hills on pieces of cardboard. At some point someone would get their leg opened up by a rock uncovered by sliding in the mud, and end up having to go to emergency.

There were a lot of changes to the equipment at parks.

Everything metal like slides, merry-go-rounds, etc. was made smaller, shorter, and made of plastic.

Even the shorter slides were turned into tunnels so that no one could fall off.

Swings were also shortened so you couldn't go as high and were made so that the most acrobatic kids couldn't go over the top.

Jungle gyms went completely away until rock climbing became a fad and now they have lame rock-climbing equivalents of the jungle gyms.

We used to use cardboard on grass slopes. That was fun.

Last time I used them...last year...the plastic on mine was okay. Probably depends on brand.

Ours were the Jarts brand, I didn't know there were knock-offs.

All of the school and public playground equipment here disappeared as a result of a big liability verdict for some kid who got injured. All the playground equipment got dug up within a year.

We used to sled ride down a backwoods road on a ‘53 Chevy car hood...We could get about 5-7 kids on it and rode it wherever it took us...In the ditch, off the road into the woods...It was great!!!

It was great for me too. And the teeter-totter was the best way to determine what friends you could trust.

Go look up Jordan Peterson and his 12 Rules for Life, one of which is basically don’t interrupt a kid who’s skateboarding.
