Lord God Jesus Christ, rest Thy servant with the saints and comfort his children.

In the name of the Father and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, amen.

I am sorry to hear of your father's passing, and will keep you and your family in my prayers. May your father be with our Lord in Heaven today.

My father was my hero too, and I lost him back in 1978. He was from Holland, born in Schoondijke in 1904, and came to the U.S. in 1912 with his parents and two brothers. My maiden name was De Hollander. My grandmother was a DeVisser. I was fortunate to have visited Schoondijke back in April of 2006 with my oldest son. My father's family also lived in Groede for a while before they emigrated to the U.S. The Breskens area was German occupied during WWII, and the village of Schoondijke was heavily bombed by the allied forces. Schoondijke and the surrounding area was liberated by Canadian forces. My mother was born in Canada, and also has Dutch ancestry on her side of the family. She never knew any of her family history. It was only after her death that I started researching her family, and found that her ancestors had come from both England and Holland, and originally settled in New Amsterdam. I have Mayflower ancestors, and both Patriots and Loyalists on her side.

I read your profile, and noticed you are a Civil War buff. I spent several years researching the Civil War as well, and traveled to many of the battlefields in the south. My screen name comes from the 2nd black regiment raised in Massachusetts during the war. It was the sister regiment to the 54th Massachusetts featured in the movie "Glory." The 55th, like the 54th served in South Carolina as well. I've moved on from studying the Civil War, but it will always remain a topic of interest to me.

I pray that the Lord will comfort you, and your family, now and in the future.

Sorry to hear that. What Faulkner wrote is true:

“There is no such thing as was — only is. If was existed, there would be no grief or sorrow.”

However, we can take comfort, after the passing of loved ones, that they graced our existence with their presence - one that brought light into our lives. We should try to remember them as they were in better days, before the wants and cares of age crept up on them.

I’m so sorry for the loss of your father and hero.

Father in Heaven, please comfort knighthawk as he deals with the loss of his beloved father. We ask that you grant him the peace that surpasses all understanding, and comfort him with your presence in these painful days. Bring to his mind the best of times with his dad. Amen.
