When my cousin and I were ‘barefoot boys with cheeks of tan’ we discovered a pile of tar ready to be used on the street—warm but not hot. We naturally walked in it until we had ‘paved’ our feet. It was great. We could walk anywhere without pain! That is until we got back home. Oddly my aunt wasn’t happy with the tracks we left on her floors.

My next experience with foot tar was on the beaches of Santa Barbara, years before the oil spill. You could not walk on the beach without getting on your feet. Our dorms had bottles of kerosene in the shower rooms to get it off.
