You know what? Only meeting Jesus face to face here and now would make some believe.

No, sadly enough the Romans crucified many, many people, both by tying them to a cross breaking their legs so that the entire weight of their lower body pulled down on their diaphragms and letting them die relatively quickly of positional asphyxia, or by nailing them up and letting time, thirst and weather do them in.

They have found at least one case where the nail was left in the ankle bone, the feet were nailed to the sides of the upright (despite the medieval artistic rendering of them being nailed to the front through the top if the foot), with the nail passing near a nerve, if the person pressed down on the nails to relieve the pressure on his diaphragm, the nerves would create excruciating* pain. They would live and suffer a lot longer, which was the whole point to make a sufficiently gruesome object lesson...
