Police are investigating an attack that caused extensive damage to more than 60 works of art and artifacts displayed at three locations on Berlin's Museum Island and whose motivation is a mystery.
Unidentified suspects had splashed an oily liquid around the museums during opening hours on October 3, Carsten Pfohl of Berlin's criminal police told a news conference.
The damaged exhibits include Egyptian sarcophagi, stone sculptures and 19th-century paintings held at the Pergamon Museum, the Neues Museum and the Alte Nationalgalerie, according to local media reports that broke the news of the attack on Tuesday night.
The public had not been informed to enable police to investigate discreetly, he said.
The splashed liquid was oily but not corrosive and the museum's top exhibits are not affected, said Friederike Seyfried, the director of Berlin's Egyptian collection, which is housed in the Neues Museum.
The attacks, which could have been carried out with a water pistol or a concealed spray bottle, were not visible on surveillance cameras

The religion of peace?
They aren’t really known for subtle attacks. This seems like lone lunatic.
Pretty much the way things are today
Discovery of something new or destruction of something old
The Pergamon Museum is great! They have reconstructed the Pergamon Alter in one huge room. In a nearby room you walk through the market gate of Miletus and emerge from the Ishtar Gate of ancient Babylon. The Ishtar Gate was considered one of the 7 wonders of the ancient world.
I first visited this museum on a business trip. Later, when I took my family to Europe, I made sure that it was one of our stops in Berlin.
Their are several museums on Museum Island. The allies took care to avoid bombing this area of Berlin.
Thanks a fool in paradise. I'm sure the perp or perps will turn out to be Islamofascist, and I'm also sure the immediate cover story by German media will attribute the attack sto "white supremacists".
Is there a list of damaged pieces?
Muzzies is a good bet given the population mix in Germany these days. However, another thought occurred to me, which is it might be far left nutjobs who think that having these antiquities in Europe is wrong and a sign of Western/white “privilege.”
Distinction without a difference. :^)
