“We Could Lose Movie Theater-Going Forever”

What took them so long. The last time I went to a theater was because my wife really wanted to see War Horse. Meh. It was better at home when we streamed it a few months ago.

I really enjoyed Avatar in imax 3D. Other than the eye candy aspect, the movie sucked, though. I also saw episode 1 of star wars when it hit the theaters because I had free passes. But that’s my moviegoing history this century.

A halfway decent home theater and 55” flat screen at home is literally better than the theater experience. Why bother?

I think this lockdown is bringing a lot of changes that were waiting in the wings. The biggest one is Work From Home. That is a serious game - and culture - changer. I feel for owners of commercial real estate in cities. They are going to take a serious bath on this.

How's this ? The last time I was in a theatre was 2 years ago to buy a ticket and show support for Dinesh D'Sousa's latest. Nor did I stay. I did sit for 10 minutes but mostly wanted to see what the inside of today's theatres looked like. It had been 30-40 years, since the advent of home movie rentals.

I suspect chain theatres may survive, but barely, with some serious downsizing....and with massive fewer dollars flowing back to Hollywood. Lots less influence. All good.

Comfortable seats, volume exactly how you want it, pause available for a bathroom/drink break, your favorite snacks and beverages, no obnoxious strangers talking, explaining plot, revealing the end, etc, no kid kicking the back of your seat, subtitles available if movie is set in Scotland...how can you claim home theater is better?
