Yeah, the measles wiped out a huge number. When other peoples come in and sort of “take over” tribal people, the results is inavariable a dog’s breakfast.
The Indian government has a good method with the Andaman Islands. Just let them be. If they want to leave, fine. One did and tried civilization and after a few years decided he didn’t like it and went back. BUt when it’s in the midst of a big continent it’s much harder.
And there is no real separated Hawaiian culture any more, remnants, but their entire system is no more and cannot be brought back. I don’t think the Hawaiians now would even like it!
I used to rent an old house in lower Nuuanu from a Chinese guy who seemed to run a lot of stuff in Chinatown. He didn’t want a check, I had to go to his place and pay him cash once a month. Interesting fellow.

In the mid-70’s, I lived in “Saddle City” (Waimanalo, Oahu), later (83-87) in Aiea.
Saddle City was owned by a guy named Takshera (sp?)...a Portugese guy. Then in the 80’s it seemed that the Japanese were buying everything.
