YEah I did know the haoles were edged out of political power but I have to believe they didn’t give up the m-o-n-e-y and then again the other races aren’t any less avaricious than the haoles when it comes right down to it. Perhaps it was the measles that wiped out 9/10s of the Hawaiians and what’s left has really only been a remnant ever since. Went from about 400,000 to about 40,000 in something like only 10 years.
Yeah, the measles wiped out a huge number. When other peoples come in and sort of “take over” tribal people, the results is inavariable a dog’s breakfast.
The Indian government has a good method with the Andaman Islands. Just let them be. If they want to leave, fine. One did and tried civilization and after a few years decided he didn’t like it and went back. BUt when it’s in the midst of a big continent it’s much harder.
And there is no real separated Hawaiian culture any more, remnants, but their entire system is no more and cannot be brought back. I don’t think the Hawaiians now would even like it!
I used to rent an old house in lower Nuuanu from a Chinese guy who seemed to run a lot of stuff in Chinatown. He didn’t want a check, I had to go to his place and pay him cash once a month. Interesting fellow.
I have an old old friend on the Big Island who grew up on Oahu. I’ll give him a call one of these days and talk story.
