They got their houses burned down that’s what happened. And THEY got tarred and feathered (different kind of tar - not (quite) as deadly as modern road or roofing tar) and attached to a fence rail where they were unceremoniously carried and dumped aboard a ship leaving for the UK with a one way steerage ticket purchased in their name and nothing else to their name but the clothes on their back. Really quite brutal but in some cases getting shanghaied like that probably save their lives at least.
