Police funding cuts in major American cities have unleashed a torrent of bloodshed, according to one expert, who calls the homicide spike the Minneapolis effect.
Paul Cassell, a professor at S.J. Quinney College of Law at the University of Utah, said the escalating murder rate can be traced to Minneapolis city council voting to dismantle the police following the shocking May 25 death of Black man George Floyd in police custody.
Cassell said it appears that politicians in their haste to punish police have triggered a new epidemic of violence.
As a result of de-policing during June and July 2020, approximately 710 additional victims were murdered and more than 2,800 victims were shot, he said in a paper published Sept. 10.
Recently, major cities across the country have suffered dramatic spikes in homicides. These spikes are remarkably large, suddenly appearing and widespread.
At this rate, 2020 will easily be the deadliest year in America for gun-related homicides since at least 1999, while most other major crime categories are trending stable or slightly downward.
He added: Reduced proactive policing (sometimes referred to in the academic literature de-policing) is the most logical explanation for the recent homicide spikes.
Cities such as Chicago, Detroit, New York, Milwaukee and Philadelphia, among countless others, have seen a big hike in murders, shootings and aggravated assault.
The violence started to increase significantly in late May, Cassell said.
According to data from the Minneapolis Police Department, there has been a surge in a wide array of criminal activity.
But its the homicide rate that tells the tale.
The murder rate in Minneapolis rose a staggering 87%, rising from 30 slayings in 2019 to 56 so far this year.
In the Big Apple, shootings were up 166% in August compared to the same month in 2019. The murder rate has climbed 47% as well, following years of declines.
I think what Minneapolis is seeing is the same thing were seeing all over the country. Were seeing a reduction in proactive policing, and as a result of that, homicide and shootings are skyrocketing all over the country, Cassell told Fox9.
The data also pinpoint the timing of the spikes to late May 2020, which corresponds with the death of George Floyd while in police custody in Minneapolis and subsequent anti-police protests protests that likely led to declines in law enforcement.
If this thesis is correct, it is reasonable to estimate that, as a result of de-policing during June and July 2020, approximately 710 additional victims were murdered and more than 2,800 victims were shot.
New York City, Los Angeles, Philadelphia and Portland have all approved police funding cuts.
These educated people sure are slow to figure things out.
This is what #BLM has brought upon he urban landscape. A high percentage of the victims are black. And if you point this out, youll be branded a racist.
Really?
Who wouldve ever guessed such a thing?
It’s also triggering skyrocketing sales of guns & ammo - for those lucky enough to find either.
