I want to buy a home defense shotgun and I would appreciate FR input. Ive always been more of a rifle and pistol person. What say yall to a senior citizen buying a shotgun for the first time. Is Mossberg Shockmaster or Roadblocker a good choice.
Remington 1100 is what I have. (semi-auto) Just keep pulling that trigger.
oops I forgot, 12 gauge

Cool, I’ll have to check them out if things ever get back to relative normal.
20 gauge is for women (and pussies) REAL MEN use 12 gauge! /s
Boy, you are right with that. I was looking for an 870. They only had a left hand version. I bought it before the guy stopped saying the sentence.

That’s the only issue I have with my 16,If...or when...it all goes south, any ammo I’m likely to find will be for 12 ga. Then again, the shotguns might be available too...
Mine is a Winchester model 1200 made in 1964, first year they made them. Love it.
As far as my recommendations, I’m pretty much with the crowd here, Remington 870 or Mossberg 500. Both easily available around here, the mossberg about $250, the 870 runs $300 or so and a few bucks less at pawn shops. These days not much less though.
I’m planning to go to a gun show tomorrow, that’s one thing I’ll be looking at. Shotguns, derringers and ammo. Especially ammo. I’d like to pick up at least another 100 for .22.

One of the best...
I have (thank God!) never spent time in "a post-apocalyptic world", but I have lived through more than just a couple "panics" or "runs" on guns & ammunition. Funny thing that I noticed - the guns & ammo that go up in price fastest AND disappear first are the "common calibers, 12 gauge, 9mm, .45, .223, .308". My local gun store currently has almost no ammunition in those calibers, and the firearms in those chamberings also cost more, and are in short supply. I saw exactly the same thing happen (more than once) when Obama was president.
So, what have I been able to find, when times are tough? Back during the Obama panics, my local Walmart had .40S&W, 7.62x39, 20 gauge (including slugs), and some other practical calibers, just about everytime I went in the store, at regular, un-inflated Walmart prices. (Which is one reason I like 40 caliber conversion kits for 9mm pistols ;^).
o what about some real worst-case scenario (nuclear attack, zombies, etc)? Simple rule: a box of ammo sitting on the shelf in your closet, is worth ten 'theoretical' boxes that might be down the road somewhere. Anybody who figures they'll be able to wander around picking up ammo like they're on an Easter egg hunt with Mel Gibson, is just dreaming...
;^)
The best shotgun is the one you have. Single barrel, double barrel, pump, auto, 12 or 20GA - Slugs, double ought, bird shot.. if it shoots it shoots.
That being said, Mossberg, Remington and Browning were all on board my boat. 12GA all. Sadly there was an unknown fuel line problem and well, the boat burned, and sank.
Such a loss.
If you find a Mossberg - BUY IT! Good luck!
I have a ammo sling but am going to trade it in for an ammo pouch with a clip-around belt. Would allow reloading with one hand on the fly.
Mossberg 930 . A semiauto that holds 8 + 1 rounds. Problem is , out of stock at most stores.
I used to own & shoot both. A few years ago, after having successfully achieved 'gray-haired-old-fart' status, I sold my last 12 (which actually had one of the comp-stocks somebody mentioned, higher up on this thread), and gave all of my 12 gauge ammo to a buddy...
I still have my grandfathers 12 g double barrel that I used for my first game, rabbits, pheasants and squirrels at age 10 almost 70 years ago.
It kicked like a mule then, and now that in almost 80, it seem like it's two mules.
I also have a 20 g pump with an 18 inch barrel, which will ruin my bedroom, but I will never miss, and I can put out 2-3 in the blink of an eye, wait a second and see if I need to shoot again, little recoil.
The man said he was a first time senior with a shot gun.
I'm not a pussy, nor a woman, but I am old, and "a man's got to know his limitations".
An Ithaca Model 37 ejects to the bottom which solves the shell hull across the face issue.
A 20 Ga Ithaca Model 37 with a 20 inch barrel is a great choice for a home defense shotgun. Its just more expensive than a Mossberg or Remington.
Thanks for the tip.
