I don’t believe this for a second. Diamond Princess data certainly didn’t indicate it was airborne as people sharing cabins didn’t both get it.
Fecal transmission is much more plausible.
My vote goes for both lousy ventilation and disgusting shared toilet pipes. Whenever there is a problem with a toilet on a cruise ship, the crew opens the wall in the corridor in front of the cabin.
