Breyer is 82 years old. Thomas is a decade younger but has been rumored as a near-term retirement because he doesn’t want to die in office.
I thought Alito had also mentioned something in the last year.
Oh yeah Breyer is on deaths door, but like you said I could see Thomas just choose to retire, and he is the most conservative and losing him under a democrat would move the court considerably.
I cant see Thomas making it through 8 years of a liberals term (or more). Which is what you have to consider (and RBG didn’t thankfully)
