John Denver had several DUIs after the hearings and died in 1997. Interestingly, the PMRC etc also though Denver would testify in favor of their stance (he basically accused them of being Nazis). In contrast, Zappa toured in 1988 with a killer band (I saw him that tour) though that tour imploded in Europe due to personnel problems. Frank died more popular than ever.

Dee Snider’s bandmates were horrified by his testimony. They had worked so hard to be seen as the voice of the rebellious then he sits down and starts talking about how they have all of the same values as any other family. Their hardcore fans who looked up to them now saw them as posers. They blamed him, not their music, for the drop in sales. I believe there was an episode of VH1 Behind the Music that went into a lot of detail on that period of the band’s history.
I had forgotten about those hearings. Where is Tipper Gore now? Consigned to the dustbin of history methinks.
What’s funny is when Zappa was on Crossfile, it was the “Liberal” Tom Braden, that attacked Zappa, while the “Conservative”, Robert Novak, actually agreed with Frank on some things.
