The more I think about it, I think Trump will make a public announcement about his decision (to make sure the media carries it live as the fake news media will be drooling at the thought of skewering him) - and say that he appreciates the support of the Senate Leader, but that he will be delaying announcing his appointment until after the election.
It would project supreme confidence in his expectation of winning which will drive the left bonkers. And sidestep a political war that he most likely would not win.
If someone finds a way to secure Collins vote, that might change, but Mittens will do anything to deny Trump and there are other weak sisters besides Murkowski.
The calculation will be: Do I want this fight now and risk losing confirmation or run a psyop now and have the luxury of time to get the nominee I really want? Because a rushed confirmation before the election would not work for a controversial nominee like Amy Conan Barrett.
Maybe he wasn’t kidding about Ted Cruz ;-)
Barrett got put thru the wringer for her current position.
Feinstein did the bloodletting and IMO, put her to a religious test.
Anything they do now, to no matter who is nominated, will make the Kavanaugh hit job look like a picnic in the park.
Within the last week or so, Cruz specifically said that he did not want a SCOTUS seat. Rather, he wanted to stay in the Senate and, "stay fighting".
See "Ted Cruz on potential Supreme Court nomination: Thanks but no thanks":
"It is not the desire of my heart," the Texas Republican told Fox Business News on Sunday. "I want to be in the political fight. I want to be fighting to nominate and confirm three, four, five principled, constitutionalist justices. But that's not where I want to serve. I want to stay fighting right where I am in the U.S. Senate."TXnMA

I can see where you’re coming from bigbob.
how would this square up with vulnerable senate races that could change the majority?
all in tight races: collins; gardner; mcsally; graham; tillis
take 3 flips out of those 5 & add never trumpers mitturd & murkowski & what do you have????
it’s like playing russian roulette, imo
