Jackson was a devout man who was not involved in the war for typical southern reasons. Like RE Lee, they were simply Virginians who wanted the boots of Northern soldiers off of Virginia soil.

Slavery in Virginia was mostly confined to the Piedmont and Tidewater. People west of the Piedmont, in the mountains where Stonewall Jackson was from, were not at all sympathetic to slavery.
Jackson thought it was his duty, in service to his God, to educate and make blacks literate. To consider him a racist is libel of the worst kind.
