Jackson was a devout man who was not involved in the war for typical southern reasons. Like RE Lee, they were simply Virginians who wanted the boots of Northern soldiers off of Virginia soil.
The civil war was fought over states rights, the right to leave the Union if a state choice to do so. It was not fought over slavery initially.

“Co. Aytch or, A Sde Show of the Big show” by Samuel R Watkins is a great book if you’re interested in this subject. It is a first hand account written by a Confederate foot soldier instead of a historian about military officers. It reminded me of some of the Vietnam war novels I read years ago but was written in a similar style of Mark Twain about 20 years after the war between the states.
