Dietary intervention could benefit heart health in those with muscular dystrophy. That's according to new research published in Experimental Physiology. If these findings are confirmed in humans, it could mean that off the shelf supplements could improve health and life expectancy.
Scientists from Iowa State University, Auburn University and the University of Montana in the United States found that supplementing the mice's food with quercetin (a flavonol found in many fruits, vegetables, leaves, and grains) improved biomedical outcomes, providing an inflammatory and antioxidant effect. To the groups' surprise, they also found that the quercetin-fed mice were more active than the control group
Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD) is a severe type of muscular dystrophy that causes a decline in cardiac health resulting in premature death, at an average age of 26 years. Duchenne's predominantly affects males.
The researchers used several mouse models for muscular dystrophy, carrying out experiments in parallel. By doing this they were able to replicate muscular dystrophy in humans as closely as possible.
Dr John C. Quindry, the corresponding author, said: "A currently available dietary intervention could benefit those with muscular dystrophy. We gave the mice a quercetin dose that was proportional to those that could be given to humans. This allows scientists to make the best possible connections between animal and human research findings."

Another great (or, very promising) benefit of Quercetin.
Doesnt Quercetin vitamin C and zink help against china flu.
According to Dr Zev Zelenko, yes...quercetin may be a good preventative, for China Flu.
I am 81 years old, very seldom wear a mask, and take quercetin, zinc, and vitamin c daily. So far no china flu and until a vaccine for china flu is available will not change my daily routine.
Have been taking zinc plus quercetin since Dr Zlev said its a good OTC for Hydroxychloroquine and zinc and my brother who
is a GP confirmed and we are also giving to my 93 year old dad per his advice. Glad to hear this!!!
Wonderful!!
I wish I could get my inlaws and other family members to take it.
Stay safe, out there ;-)
That is great that your (doc) brother confirmed.
LOL! That is likely the opposite of what the writer at MedicalXPress meant to transcribe.
Dock greens can be eaten with butter, bacon, hard-boiled eggs and seasonings you would use for spinach. The leaves can also be stuffed like vine leaves with a rice, herb and cheese filling. Dried they can be used as a seasoning for rice, potatoes, seafood or sandwich spread.
We just started taking Quercetin a couple of weeks ago with zinc.
My wife and I have been taking Quercetin and zinc every day since March to avoid contracting China virus. So far so good. We live in a Covid hot zone of Hidalgo County Texas.
Quercetin is a zinc ionophore - it helps zinc ions change their charge so that cells can absorb them more easily. The zinc stops the replication of many viruses, including the Wu Flu.
FYI, this is part of the reason that Hydroxychloroquine works. Quercetin isn’t as efficient of an ionophore, so instead of taking 200 mg twice a day like HCQ, you need about 1,000 - 1,200 mg/day of Quercetin - according to the article I read about this a few weeks ago.
Cool...I’ve been using the Vit D3, Vit C, Zinc, Quercitin, and NAC cocktail the past couple months for COVID prophylaxis. It’s working so far — no COVID. ;>)
I asked my doc about the cocktail Vit D3, Vit C, Quercitin, Zinc and NAC.
He replied “just follow the CDC recommendations.” I was very disappointed in that boilerplate reply. Too many docs won’t go out on a limb for fear of lawsuits.
Lol. What exactly is the CDC recommendation? Go home until you get critica!?
I had to cut back from two capsules/day to one. The two were making my thighs hurt bad, especially at night. Went back and forth several times and that was it. Have no idea about the mechanism. But it feels like blood vessel pain. One capsule causes it also but very little.
