Prof. Biden Claims a Black Man Named Lewis Latimer Invented the Light Bulb, Not a White Guy Named 'Edison.'

Joe Biden, who claims he wants to fact-check Donald Trump in real time during the presidential debates, told a real whopper on Thursday during his visit to Kenosha.

“People fear that’s, which, that which is different. We gotta, for example, why in God’s name don’t we teach history in history classes? A black man invented the light bulb, not a white guy named Edison.”

Now Biden claims Edison didn’t invent the lightbulb. pic.twitter.com/ykQOFqjS0S

Fact check: False.

Make no mistake about it, Thomas Edison invented the light bulb. Joe Biden presumably was referring to Lewis H. Latimer, a former slave who worked as a researcher under Edison, who, three years after Edison patented the incandescent light bulb, patented a more efficient way of manufacturing carbon filaments, which were used in Edison’s bulb design. Fake internet rumors have been circulating for some time now suggesting that Latimer is the actual inventor of the light bulb and even the telephone.

Apparently, fake internet rumors are where Joe Biden gets his history lessons.

And the Left wonders why we don’t like them tearing down statues. When they’re not destroying history, they’re trying to rewrite it.

Lewis Howard Latimer was an American inventor and patent
draftsman for the patents of the light bulb and telephone.

So electric power will now come from Southern California Latimer?

The original invention is still Edison’s. Latimer improvised it.

According to the history, Latimer made the first carbon filament and air evacuated bulb; Edison just improved on it. So, it seems Latimer was first with the concept. Edison was a charlatan in that he stole lots of Tesla’s idea’s and while Tesla was working for him didn’t pay him his salary saying it was an American joke to hire someone and not pay them.

What’s the difference between a 40W light bulb and Biden?

He was an employee of Edison who patented an improvement to the filament. That does not make him the inventor of the light bulb? He wasn’t even born when the first electric lighting was demonstrated. Don’t be a fool who accepts the leftist rewriting of history at face value.

The article quoted above clearly says Edison invented the bulb.

No, according to the new Leftist History. And you even have that a little backassward. “Better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak and to remove all doubt.” Abraham Lincoln.

In response to: “He wasn’t even born when the first electric lighting was demonstrated.”, Fireman15

Humphry Davy demonstrated the carbon arc around 1805, the first practical electric light. So your point is???

Latimer was employed as a “patent draftsman” this meant that he drew the pictures that illustrated other people's patents and he also illustrated books.

Gee, well according to several NON-LEFTIST sites he did. And Lincoln didn't say that; Mark Twain did. You should get YOUR sources right.

So, with dealing with people such as yourself, I take this quote by Mark Twain:"Never argue with stupid people, they will drag you down to their level and beat you with experience"

So with that, have a Nice Day - if you can figure out how to have one.

I am sure that he was a talented guy and contributed to a number of cutting edge products of his time, but more likely as a team member and not a lone wolf as the revisionists are now trying to portray. A friend of mine worked for NASA in the Apollo program as an engineer. HIs name appears in a number of patents but since he was not a black guy we probably will not hear some time down the road that he was responsible for puting a man on the moon.

Since you just became an expert on this subject this today why don't you provide us poor ignorant folks the links that you found on Google this morning!

So with that, have a Nice Day - if you can figure out how to have one.

Thanks, you too! I am so impressed with your bredth of knowledge. Maybe you could volunteer to become one of Biden's histrory advisers. You are obviously a historian extraordinaire! /s

Edison invented the first practical household light bulb. Practical means worth more than its cost. The key was enclosing a “carbon filament” in a near vacuum. Famously, this requires many, many experiments. Hence, Edison is associated with the saying that genius is 99 percent perspiration and 1 percent inspiration.

If there is a rival to Edison as inventor of the household light bulb, it is an Englishman. The Englishman was on the same track as Edison, but had problems with creating a near vacuum. These problems were suddenly solved after Edison perfected the process. Edison sued the Englishman for patent infringement, and the two agreed, out-of-court, to a deal. (This is not uncommon.)

Latimer, among others, improved on the Edison’ incandescent light bulb. In Latimer’s case, this involved an improved filament. Improvements to the incandescent light bulb continued, and continue to today, making it last longer and longer, and reducing the cost of indoor light tremendously.

At later times came entirely new light bulb technologies including flourescent light bulbs, halogen light bulbs and LED light bulbs. The stream of inventions is, today, so fast, it’s impossible to keep up with. This is why we know more inventors of the 19th Century, when there was only a trickle, than we do current inventors, when invention is a wide and fast-flowing stream.

While I agree with you in general... Incandescent bulbs made in more recent times have been designed to fail after a certain length of time... This actually started in the 1920s with an agreement reached by all of the major light bulb manufacturers of that time. Incandescent light bulbs were the poster child for “planned obsolescence” for almost a hundred years.
