Portland, Oregon, Mayor Ted Wheeler responded almost nonchalantly to NPR when asked about the nightly violent riots in his city that have injured countless police officers, destroyed property, and shuttered businesses.
[The protest] will ultimately burn itself out, Wheeler told the local public radio station last week
.The Free Beacon reported on Wheelers stance, which did not condemn the violence:
Wheeler told OPR [Oregon Public Radio] reporter Rebecca Ellis last week that he expects daily protests in the citywhich began in May following the death of George Floydto last for some time. He said he expects nightly violence that followed the protests will ultimately burn itself out.
The mayor, who is in charge of Portlands police force, told OPR the department will adjust to the situation on its own.
Theyve tried everything from not showing up to preemptively dispersing crowds, and some of those strategies, in my opinion, have worked well, Wheeler said. Others have not worked well.
Wheeler previously proposed to top aides a high-risk policing approach in which police would be ordered to stand down and not respond to rioters, the Beacon reported. He never put those measures into effect, leaving local police without clear directives in dealing with crowds, whether they are rioting, looting businesses, or setting fire to government buildings.

“”””Wrong. This sh!t show has been going on in Portland for YEARS.””””
That’s what I thought. But hey, it will burn itself out......in a hundred years or so.
Ugh. What a winner. Sounds like the mayor of nearby Louisville, KY talking about the Until Freedom group moving here from out of state to protest, they had this big march Tues and this idiot goes, ‘Well this group is largely peaceful, but if anything happens we’ll be ready’ and ‘Public safety is our #1 priority’ Wanted to reach through the computer monitor and smack the hell out of him. 80+ days of protests/riots with no end in sight.
Yeah, well, we think the wisest thing is just to let this cancer-y thing here, ah..., run its’, ahh..., natural course; You know, these cancers don’t usually last much longer than the patient does...
Yep - could not care less about MLB, the NFL, or the NBA. And if the Washington Huskies athletic department goes down this same, dark road, it’s going to be “Bye bye!”
That’s pretty damning. “We aren’t doing anything, we just hope it will stop.” And it may stop when there is nothing left to burn.
Between empty stadiums, an economic depression and athletes holding the few games hostage, this is going to be a death knell for several professional sports leagues.
People were annoyed and canceling tickets for kneeling football players. Canceling the few games after all this moral peacocking will drive most of the rest away.
You clearly care more thanI do, I could NOT care less! ;-)
“[The protest] will ultimately burn itself out,”
absoutely, Ted! ... when everything has been burned down and there’s nothing left to burn ...
It’s the city that will eventually burn out.
I trust every democrat business owner is getting the government they voted for nice and hard.
