The last time there were no Presidential debates was in 1972, I think. Nixon could afford to avoid them because he was so far ahead of McGovern--he never even mentioned McGovern's name in public during the campaign.

It's a little different for Biden in that he is not the incumbent. But his handlers may think he is so far ahead he can skip debating. But more likely they are afraid of him looking like an elderly man with dementia in the debates.
