The “he was from a different state” mantra is getting old. He is reported to live in Illinois, but only 12 miles away from Kenosha.

For those of you who don’t live near state lines, they don’t mean a lot when you live nearby. Certainly they do mean different taxes, laws, and a different groups of state and local cops. Close relatives and friends can live on both sides. When I was in high school I had one classmate whose home was in two states. I think his bedroom was in Mississippi and the kitchen was in Tennessee.

The distance he traveled isn’t the issue here. When I’ve pointed out that he’s from another state I’m referring to the legal/jurisdictional issues of two different states, not the distance between them.

We have a case here where a minor is now being charged with firearm-related crimes. The legal ramifications of where he lived, how he got the firearm, any regulations related to that particular firearm, transporting (possibly) it across state lines, etc. are all relevant to the case.
