I fell on my face with the times tables
**********************
How this saddens me.
There are “tricks to the trade” that could be taught without the stressful torture of rote memory. Yes, automaticity with basic facts is helpful, but there are building blocks to understanding those facts. At least from my experience. Instilling confidence, rather than degrading a student, is a start.
But what do I know...
Daggum. Why are there so many posts today pertaining to math? (rhetorical) I have retired from teaching!
Not to prolong this, but I was only so-so at math.
Something I came to notice, on my own, was the curious thing with nine-
9 x 1 = 9
9 x 2 = 18 1+8 = 9
9 x 3 = 27 2+7 = 9
9 x 4 = 36 3+6 + 9 etc
I guess that means something, no sure what.
Well, I have tricks - believe me it doesn’t slow me down. But i have to mentally count on my fingers, whereas other “times” just come automatically.
one of the things I am remiss about is not learning ALL of Chisanbop
