RZA, of the Wu-Tang Clan, has partnered with Good Humor to write a cheerful new ice cream truck jingle in place of Turkey in the Straw an earworm with a troubled history long criticized for being racist.
[The] melody originated from British and Irish folk songs, which had no racial connotations, Good Humor wrote of Turkey in the Straw in a statement on its website. But the song itself was first performed (and gained popularity) in American minstrel shows in the 1800s. Some songs using its same melody contained highly offensive, racist lyrics.
While these associations of Turkey in the Straw are not the only part of its legacy, it is undeniable that this melody conjures memories of its racist iterations, Good Humor added.

The Wuhan clan? What?
I always assumed they use Turkey in the Straw because there are no copy rites.
I am glad to see them focusing on the real social issues of our time instead of, say, the daily body counts in Chicago.
Turkey in the Straw doesn’t stop black kids here from lining up for ice cream.
What’s wrong with using Van Halen’s “Ice Cream Man”?
This is like the people who sued an airline for the stewardess saying "Eenie, meenie, minie, moe. Pick a seat, we've got to go" for being a racist rhyme.
copy rites
Let me get this straight, the melody is used, and none of the trucks Ive heard in my 51 years on the planet have ever had lyrics, just the tune. But because some people made offensive lyrics to this melody, theyre dropping the melody.
Maybe they should change it to Helter Skelter.
Whatever happened to the Good Humor man, or Mr. Softee ice cream trucks?
Nowadays, I see dudes in beat up old vans selling ice cream. The Good Humor and Mr. Softee trucks have disappeared, at least from my area.
I dont know. Ice creams trucks playing rap-music, and driven by Bangladeshis just wont have quite the same feel.

Wait. Are they talking about Turkey in the Straw, or your average ordinary rap song?
I think you mean copyright. :-)

Wait a minute. This is beyond insanity. Now melodies themselves are racist? Suppose someone writes racist lyrics to an innocent melody like the one used in Happy Birthday. Would the Happy Birthday song itself then be banned?
I guess so.
I’m all for offending these Left wing twits. They need to be offered every day. And when they say they are offended we should smile warmly and tell them “You’re welcome. Glad I could help you be offended today.” and to tell them to go away, they’re not in any way important to us.
Because there is already an association with ice cream and pedos. Don’t think Good Humor wants the “All flavors and push ups too” blasting out when approaching the kiddies.
Moving us forward by dwelling on the past, and finding only negative things about it.
Beating a ho after shooting your black neighbor (the more innocent and oppressed by the gangs the better) is probably the height of black gangsta culture. Thug-life’s version of Brahms or Beethoven.

This garbage is going to have to stop sooner or later. It cannot continue to go on.
