NBA Ratings Continue To Be Inexplicably Low

NBA ratings continue to be inexplicably low this month, with all of the Twitter chatter surrounding the league’s return not translating into an actual increase in viewers.

When the NBA resumed its season at the end of July, many observers assumed it would be a ratings boon for all involved. Networks were starved for sports programming as a result of COVID-19, and basketball’s glut of big name stars should have converted into a ton of viewership.

Only it didn’t.

In the first week of action, the NBA’s ratings immediately sputtered. Rather than spiking due to an increase in hype and intrigue around the return of basketball, the numbers dipped to 14 percent below pre-COVID averages.

Last week, the games that took place from Thursday to Sunday drew smaller ratings than the same period the prior week.

Our models predict:
2 Million will die from COVID
The rest will die from climate change
Folks will plan their week around NBA games

How strange? Can’t imagine why no one is watching anymore, perhaps the lockdowns have caused people to take up bird watching?

And MLB team revenues are down 90-95%. Owners, players, fans and TV have a reckoning imminent. Expect fire sales on teams and BKs. And likely the final nail in the coffin of cable tv which has been using every subscriber to subsidize exorbitant sports contracts. It’s over.

As usual, you bring insightful, clear thinking logic and observations to topics.

You are entirely correct.

Athletes and professions related to sports have live in a Xanadu fantasy land for over 100 years. Their income and lifestyles eclipsed that of most royalty.

I had a conversation with a friend of mine who is a captain on one of the major airlines. My friend also has an MBA, and is quite savvy. His colleagues only hope is in a CARES 2 bailout of another $30 Billion from Pelosi, McConnell, and Trump. He tried to explain to them that it won’t happen. He also tried to explain that their company sold a product that few people wanted right now — or will want in the foreseeable future. Many of his fellow employees can’t deal with the reality.

You mean since I decided to drop the NBA like a bad habit, since learning that LeBron and company are now working for the People’s Liberation Armp and are effectively slave owners?

NBA Ratings peaked 2011-2012 season. They have been slowly declining since.

Re: SJWs killing DC comics: It was summarized quite nicely in a video I saw yesterday. The most recent Wonder Woman comic shows her as morbidly obese on the cover.

The DC editors and artists were MUCH more worried about getting reaction on twitter than making magazine sales. As you noted, they're all out of work, now.

It's been very odd to watch valuable properties turned over to people who have no love for them and no understanding of them, and these people run them into the ground.

The NBA is a little different, as most of the players are probably on board with it. Course, most NBA players are bankrupt five years after they leave the league.
