In the past people formed groups for survival.
Those groups probably started as extended families working together to guarantee safety from predators and other family groups and to see that all were fed. Their rules were few and simple. The penalties were harsh: most likely expulsion from the group which meant death, either slowly from starvation or quickly by predators.
Those groups became clans and tribes with similarly simple rules and penalties.
It was when those clans/tribes became settled societies that survival became easier and people found the opportunity to impose more rules.
The larger and more settled the society the further from death by starvation and predation the populace became. For some reason they found the need for MORE rules.
We are at the point that relative safety is assured and no one is starving. We are living in a time which actually requires few rules but in a cruel twist our politicians impose hundreds of new rules on us each year. Then there are the unelected “enforcers” (the “Karens” of the world) who love nothing more than telling the rest of us how to live.
Urbanization:

-Light and noise pollution
-Anonymity
-Natural disconnect
-Highly transient
Industrial Revolution and socialism:
-Feminism
-Globalism
-Breakdown of family unit and religion
How do we accommodate a modern high tech and industrial society which creates cities, but preserve culture and maintain social order?
The answers have been (just one example) government subsidizing school lunches for all, before and after school programs, summer camps, full/all day schools, lots of counselors at schools... Which all of course only addresses the break down of the family (high divorce rates and single mom) and dual income homes in this industrial and urban world. Why do you think that now given this BS pandemic schools -will- open no matter what? Based on how we should protect ourselves and others (according to the majority accepted and expert ideas), i.e. social distancing, should we really be opening schools?
The history of man was defined by man shaping his environment. Today the environment is shaping us more so than in the past, specifically urbanization and the industrial society define social interactions, our circadian rhythm, male-female roles, ideas or philosophies regards right and wrong, beautiful and ugly, an after life, economics... ***Do you think a Karl Marx or Nietzsche would have existed or gotten any social traction in a society pre-urban and pre-industrial?***
