'Professional sports' are called that because they are played by professionals. These players have taken their eyes off of the prize; I don't think I will miss the NFL all that much (50 years, including working Monday Night Football, etc.)
SF 49'ers classic wide receiver, Jerry Rice, made his name catching football's from quarterback, Joe Montana. Montana retired and Steve Young stepped into the position. Jerry Rice spent his off-season practicing with a right handed thrower to get accustomed to the change. THAT IS THE MARK OF A PROFESSIONAL, not whining and protesting.
Jerry Rice continued a spectacular career.
