Wouldn’t it be nice if the powers to be reported how many people died of heart attacks, cancer, etc. each day? That would give us some perspective.

Exactly. There needs to be perspective to the numbers so we can compare it to other risks. But of course they don’t. It would totally mess up the doomsday scenario.
