SAN ANTONIO (KTSA News) – A 30-year-old COVID-19 patient at a San Antonio hospital has died after reportedly attending a COVID party.

Dr. Jane Appleby, Chief Medical Officer at Methodist Hospital, said she’s sharing the ‘heartbreaking story,’ not because she wants to be an alarmist, but because she wants the community to know that the virus is serious and it can spread easily.

“Wearing a proper mask significantly reduces both the chance of breathing those droplets, and the chance of spreading them to others.”

I keep asking, when the moisture dries out of the droplets, won’t the attached viruses that collect on the mask be easier to breathe in? It is like trying to stop a bb with a chain link fence.

I have worn masks around dust, and when the mask gets moisturized from your breath, it start to collect debris on the surface and makes breathing more difficult. You breathe harder, sucking in more [virus].

Then, their are your eyes wide open when you walk into a cloud of droplets that the person six feet in front of you just left hanging. The fastest way for a virus to enter your body is through the eyes.

An experiment shows that an N95 mask will stop a virus two inches when worn. The rest are measured in feet. I believe it said the type of mask you make for yourself as per instructions of the Surgeon General is four feet.

How many people need to wear masks to reduce community transmission?

“What you want is 100 percent of people to wear masks, but you’ll settle for 80 percent,” said Rutherford. In one simulation, researchers predicted that 80 percent of the population wearing masks would do more to reduce COVID-19 spread than a strict lockdown.

The latest forecast from the Institute of Health Metrics and Evaluation suggests that 33,000 deaths could be avoided by October 1 if 95 percent of people wore masks in public.

Even if you live in a community where few people wear masks, you would still reduce your own chances of catching the virus by wearing one, said Chin-Hong and Rutherford.

Does the type of mask matter?

Studies have compared various mask materials, but for the general public, the most important consideration may be comfort. The best mask is one you can wear comfortably and consistently, said Chin-Hong. N95 respirators are only necessary in medical situations such as intubation. Surgical masks are generally more protective than cloth masks, and some people find them lighter and more comfortable to wear.

The bottom line is that any mask that covers the nose and mouth will be of benefit.

“The concept is risk reduction rather than absolute prevention,” said Chin-Hong. “You don’t throw up your hands if you think a mask is not 100 percent effective. That’s silly. Nobody’s taking a cholesterol medicine because they’re going to prevent a heart attack 100 percent of the time, but you’re reducing your risk substantially.”

How many doses does the article say he was given of hydroxychloquine and zinc? Funny but for some reason it seems like this isn’t even considered as a treatment.

My understanding is that the virus itself cannot remain intact without a liquid enclosure. We wear N95 masks at work, and what we do is rotate them and leave the just-worn ones to dry in the sun. It’s not as good as replacing them each time, but we ordered our N95 masks in January and there hasn’t been any supply of them since then .

I think you are asking a bit much if you expect the hospital to disclose the exact course of treatment of a deceased patient. I’m sure that would violate all sorts of HIPAA rules.

Viral particles often ride on water droplets (like from a cough), and a mask *can* stop those. Focusing on just the size of the actual virus is not helpful.

I have NO idea.

I think the virus can get into the sides that are loose from the face - you need to have the mask sealed against your skin...at least I read that somewhere.

Cholesterol medicines theoretically have been scientifically tested to show that they provide reductions in cholesterol. However, there are side effects that prevent some from using them. Also, people have the freedom not to take the medication.

The same cannot be said for masks on their efficacy. Also, there are side effects to wearing the masks. Recommending people use masks is fine for security theater, but requiring them without sufficient high quality and direct scientific studies is wrong.

The point I am making is that the cause of death was not included in the story. I am commenting about the media, not about the subject of the story.

What weasel wording? If you read the article, you’ll see that there are other young patients in the same hospital

And you might also see that nowhere in the article does it say that any of them had or died of COVID.

Go ahead, read it... My comments are in brackets.

“At Methodist Hospital today, we have several 20-year-olds and several 30-year-olds who are critically ill. [Critically ill from what? She doesn’t say, does she? Or perhaps she did, and the “journalist” chose to omit that information. I wonder why...]. “Some of these younger folks come to the hospital for treatment and can be discharged home, yet others become ill rather quickly and require intensive care,” she explained. [Become I’ll rather quickly from what? Notice how it is never stated that they were/are ill from COVID]

Appleby warns that people with hypertension, diabetes and obesity are at a higher risk for suffering severe complications from the COVID virus. [Ah, yes, she warns about risk factors for COVID, yet that is also not a statement that any of these young “victims” are actually COVID victims.]

The article is absolutely written in a way to make it SOUND like these young people are ill and dying from COVID, but also very deliberately avoids actually SAYING that.

“ not a single word in that article that any of the young people in that hospital actually have covid ...”

Yes it does. Apparently the host tested positive, thus the “COVID Party”.

The rest is pure conjecture.

Yep you are a fool. The reason we always know about the oddball death of a young person from COVID related complications is due to the fact the chances of this happening IS STATICALLY ALMOST ZERO. It’s like seeing big foot or a blue lobster. It makes the news.
