Seattle's Kshama Sawant warns Jeff Bezos after passing Amazon tax: 'We are coming for you'

Seattle city councilmember Kshama Sawant had a personal message for billionaire Jeff Bezos after the passage of the so-called Amazon tax, warning him that “we are coming for you.”

The avowed socialist framed Monday’s 7-2 council vote for the hefty payroll tax on larger businesses as a step toward the goal of overthrowing the “bankrupt system of capitalism” and replacing it with “a socialist world.”

“And if you, Jeff Bezos, want to drive that process forward by lashing out against us in our modest demands, then so be it,” she said in a video address that was posted Tuesday on Socialist Alternative. “Because we are coming for you and your rotten system.”

Two years ago, the council passed and then promptly repealed a head tax on businesses with more than $20 million in annual gross revenue in the face of opposition from a coalition of businesses, including Amazon, that sought to overturn the tax with a ballot referendum.

In her message, Ms. Sawant warned Mr. Bezos, the Amazon CEO and one of the world’s richest people, that he would face the wrath of “thousands” if he tried that again.

“I have a message for Jeff Bezos and his class,” Ms. Sawant said. “If you attempt again to overturn the Amazon tax, working people will go all out in the thousands to defeat you. And we will not stop there. Because you see, we are fighting for far more than this tax, we are preparing the ground for a different kind of society.”

I know Nikki Haley's history. She was a Republican governor of South Carolina and UN Ambassador for Trump.

Her authorizing the relocation of the Confederate flag off of the statehouse grounds in 2015 did not call for the destruction of the Confederate flag or the history of it. She even spoke in support of the flag as recently as December 2019.

You're comparing apples to oranges just because both are from India. "Send her back to India" is not an appropriate response.

She's not calling for the overthrow the US government like this radical loser Kshama Sawant on the Seattle City Council. Nikki Haley is a valuable asset in the Republican Party where we have few now.

She’s Romney in a dress.
Her action legitimized the view that the battle flag was racist. That has directly lead to this frenzy of history erasing that everything Confederate related is racist.

There are very FEW companies that CAN NOT move elsewhere.

Gold mining, coal mining, oil production, etc.

Bezos can move his company to the middle of Wyoming if he wishes. There are lots of places he can move it to.

Deliberately targeting a large company that is successful while allowing murderous thugs to burn down parts of he city calls for a REMOVAL of such a Mayor.

A totally ineffective plan to protect city residents & building owners & business owners is ‘depraved indifference’, in legal terms, IMO.

IF I lived in Seattle area, I would be looking to be out of there even if I had to sell my property at a loss. WHY would I stay where I am not safe????

Attracting the best employees requires a city with the facilities that employees desire.”””

Keep in mind that Amazon needs employees who can fill orders fast. We are NOT talking about brain surgery or man on the moon stuff here.

ALL employees wish to be safe. Seattle already destroyed that illusion & no one alive today will see it cleaned up.

While I am not a user of Amazon nor a fan of Bezos, as a life long bookkeeper/accounting person—I urge him to leave the Seattle area—perhaps even the whole state.

Actions have consequences——Seattle needs to learn that.Right now, they are the POSTER CHILD for bad decisions by Mayors who are way over their pay scales.
