I had three classmates crippled by polio epidemics in the 1950s. The cancers supposedly caused by the salk vaccine are rare....I saw no cases in 40 years of practice, except for one osteosarcoma I saw in medical school...I did see cases of mesothelioma in shipyard workers and others exposed to asbestos, but no cases without that history.
As for the oral vaccine causing polio, in the US it caused a dozen cases a year when the virus mutated back to full strenghth, usually in contacts not the kid who was vaccinated. But that is why they now give shots to the kids to prevent polio.
This problem in the third world is something docs worry about, but that nuanced argument is too long and off topic to discuss here.

First of all my initial response was to Post 373 about George Washington vaccinating his troops posted by Ransomnote. And other people posted about the veracity of that statement, So I don't think it was inappropriate. In addition, I said nothing about effectiveness of ALL vaccines-my facts were about the polio vaccine.
If you think it's inappropriate then you should NOT be posting about it either.
Second. I am not anti-vax. I did not give any cherry-picked facts-just shared an experience that I lived through. I am however for informed consent. And I am for good studies of vaccines before they are released to the public-especially since the manufacturers can not be sued for malfunctions.
I shared facts that I know and lived through in the 1950s. I am not the one that manipulated data to make Polio Vaccine seem more effective than it was. It's effectiveness was sufficient without the manipulation, but that's what happened.
As far as the oral vaccine goes-I believe that Dr. Salk is a world renowned expert, so I wouldn't be one to think that he doesn't know what he's talking about, or that he cherry picked his data.
My MAIN point is that vaccines need to have appropriate trials and NOT be rushed to market. I'm sorry for your friends who had polio, but I am also sorry for the 144,000 people that contacted polio from the bad batch prepared by Cutter labs-and that happening is a well documented FACT.
I would think that you would also support really good testing to make sure that a vaccine does not have disastrous side effects.
