Cleveland Naps (Indians) Team History

Napoleon Lajoie arrived in Cleveland on June 4 and was an immediate hit, drawing 10,000 fans to League Park. Soon afterward, he was named team captain, and in 1903 the team was renamed the Cleveland Napoleons (soon shortened to Naps) after a newspaper conducted a write-in contest.

Will the state of Indiana have to change it’s name???

Why? Since peoples that Europeans referred to as “Indians” don’t now refer to themselves as such, preferring “native” Americans or “native peoples”, then Indiana no longer refers to them anyway, right?

Indiana comes from an act of Congress that officially established what was called the Indiana Territory, around the Great Lakes region and included what is now Illinois, Indiana and part of Michigan. The Indiana Territory was cleaved off of the earlier established Northwest Territory. The term Indiana WAS taken to mean “land of the Indians” when the term was coined and it was not at that time highly settled by European North Americans.
