Matthew 24:4-5 would be: Take heed that no one deceives you. For many shall come claiming to represent Me, saying that I [Jesus] am the Christ, yet shall deceive many. That is, they would proclaim Jesus as the biblical Messiah and would claim to be His representativesbut they actually would be part of a massive religious deception.
In His famous Sermon on the Mount, Jesus issued the following warning regarding false prophets or preachers: Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheeps clothing, but inwardly they are ravenous wolves (Matthew 7:15).
Christ didn’t say that all prophets would be false but that there would come false prophets. Two things stand out about any true prophet...No. 1: All their prophecies would be 100 per cent accurate No.2: They will prophesy and teach in accordance to 1 John 4 in that they will always acknowledge that Christ has come in the flesh...that Jesus is both man and God who existed with the father from the beginning. Any denial that Jesus is not come in the flesh and their teachings and the spirit prompting such teaching were to be considered antichrist.
Jesus told them, Dont let anyone fool you. 5 For many will come claiming to be the Messiah and will lead many astray. 6 When you hear of wars beginning, this does not signal my return; these must come, but the end is not yet. 7 The nations and kingdoms of the earth will rise against each other, and there will be famines and earthquakes in many places. 8 But all this will be only the beginning of the horrors to come.(from the Living Word).
I don’t know what version you are using but most versions state that many would come claiming that “they were the Messiah”
Now here is verse 23 from the King James: if any man shall say unto you, Lo, here is Christ, or there; believe it not. 24 For there shall arise false Christs, and false prophets, and shall shew great signs and wonders; insomuch that, if it were possible, they shall deceive the very elect. 25 Behold, I have told you before. 26 Wherefore if they shall say unto you, Behold, he is in the desert; go not forth: behold, he is in the secret chambers; believe it not. 27 For as the lightning cometh out of the east, and shineth even unto the west; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be. 28 For wheresoever the carcase is, there will the eagles be gathered together.
This passage is probably closer to what you were talking about since it mentions false Christs and false prophets.
