I can relate to that fun, but she might not have been far from being let go anyway-depending on how long she had been there. They certainly have no inclination to keep low-level employees.
Accounting firms such as Deloitte recruit every year from colleges for students to use as staff on audits—cheaper labor that they don’t intend to keep for long. Their work week is way over 40 hrs and often includes weekends. Usually there is no overtime, but they sometimes get “comp” time(a certain amount of hrs. = time off). However, it’s joke-comp time off is discouraged.
An employee either moves up or out-not a big % move up, but the ones that move out move into Corporations at higher positions and wages than those with the same number of years elsewhere. And they occasionally hire a 30 something to keep the age discrimination suits at bay.
The ones that move up tend to be people that can bring in new clients - especially big $$ ones.
