Lightning doesn't create a "beam" around it. Beam over/on lightning? Look closely in the images, the beam is above and formed before and above the lightning.

Rev 13:13  It performs spectacular signs, even making fire come down from heaven to earth in front of people. 
Rev 13:14  It deceives those living on earth with the signs that it is allowed to do on behalf of the first beast, telling them to make an image for the beast who was wounded by a sword and yet lived. 
Rev 13:15  The second beast was allowed to impart life to the image of the first beast so that the image of the beast could talk and order the execution of those who would not worship the image of the beast.

Something else that may have been happening. There was a dust cloud over the U.S. This may have something to do with light reflected through the cloud somehow.

If you look closely on each side of the light it comes down directly in line with a side of a building I wonder if these two buildings are significant. Also the colors at the perimeter is blue on one side red on the other. Really bizarre.
