Imagine a series of battles with over 3 MM casualties being lost to history. That was the Battle of Rzhev. After the Soviet Counteroffensive of Winter 1941-42 that drove the Nazis away from Moscow the Germans managed to hold a salient centered on the town of Rzhev. The Red Army poured massive resources into trying to eliminate the salient as it was a potential jumping off point if the Nazis wanted to have another go art Moscow. The area became known as the Rzhev Meat Grinder. The area was heavily forested with swamps favoring the Nazis on defense. Marshall Zhukov tried to eliminate the salient in Operation Mars in late 1942 as the Red Army was surrounding and liquidating the 6th Army in Stalingrad. the Soviet lost an estimated 100,000 killed and 230,000 wounded and failed. The Germans finally pulled out of the salient to free up forced for Operation Citadel. This battle was lost in history as the Soviets did not want to talk about their failing to eliminate the salient. With the Soviet archives being opened up a lot of literature has been published about these series of battles.

The other meat grinder which disappeared from history is Mga, south of Leningrad. It is on the main transportation lines from the German area and to Moscow. Units which were traveling to Leningrad met on the roads in Mga, beat themselves to pieces, and never went further. Commanders sent units to Leningrad, they never arrived, so they sent more to check on what happened.

It’s so often overlooked or understated, but the Russians lost 9 million soldiers and 20 million civilians during WWII — an incredible loss of life.

Three million casualties? Good.
There is simply no rooting interest when it comes to Nazis versus Communists.

(The above is not a statement of fact. It is either opinion or satire. Or both.)
