I endorse that, and request LS that you post it to FR. And ping me, if you please. I am very interested to learn that, ante bellum, Democrats were subsidizing newspapers to propagandize their perspective. You talk about the post - civil war era as a time when Democrats did not, for 75 years, control the press.
That corresponds to the heyday of the development of the Associated Press. And the AP needed the appearance of “objectivity” for their own credibility. Be interested in your take on that.
