Apparently written while enslaved?

The song is thought to have been composed by a slave called Wallace Wallis - or Wallace together with his wife Minerva - in the mid-1800s.

Yep. Also a signalling song. The slaves sang it to send off & encourage runaway slaves, and to express hope that their opportunity to run would come soon.
