In most cases, establishing something as a national holiday is the first step in stripping it of all meaning. It becomes just one more day for people to get paid without working, and to go shopping to buy more unnecessary crap at the mall.

Back in the 70’s in Texas, white folks celebrated Juneteenth by having to work extra hours to cover for the people who skipped work that day.
